About UPSC CSE Exam

The "Combined Defence Services" (CDS) Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy. The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively. Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Application Process

1.Candidates are required to apply Online through upsc website No other means/ mode of application will be accepted.

2.Candidates are required to have a valid personal email ID and Contact No. 

3. Candidates are advised to carefully fill in the online application themselves as no change in any of the data filled in the online application will be possible/ entertained. 

4.There is a provision to modify the online application prior to submission only. Candidates are requested to make use of this facility to correct the details in online application, if any.

Exam Pattern & Syllabus

The Competitive examination comprises:


The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each.

Note : (i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (multiple choice questions).

(ii) The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.

(iii) The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English.

(iv) Details of the syllabi are indicated in Part A of Section III.

(v) Each paper will be of two hours duration. Blind candidates and the candidates withLocomotor Disability and Cerebral Palsy where dominant (writing) extremity is affected to the extent of slowing the performance of function (minimum of 40% impairment) will; however, be allowed an extra time of twenty minutes per hour for each paper.


B.MAIN EXAMINATION : The written examination will consist of the following papers :—

Qualifying Papers :

Paper-A (One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution). 300 Marks

Syllabus for Paper I - (200 marks) Duration : Two hours

• Current events of national and international importance.

• History of India and Indian National Movement.

• Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

• Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

• Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and ClimateChange - that do not require subject specialization.

• General Science.

Syllabus for Paper II-(200 marks) Duration : Two hours

• Comprehension; • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;

• Logical reasoning and analytical ability;

• Decision making and problem solving;

• General mental ability;

• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level);
